The original Yankee Stadium, aka The House That Ruth Built, was incredibly constructed in less than one year. It opened for play on Grand Opening Day, April 18, 1923, when the Yankees hosted the Boston Red Sox. Here’s the cover from the program issued that day, featuring team owner/president Jacob Ruppert and vice president Tillinghast L’Hommedieu “TL” Huston. Huston was co-owner of the team until Ruppert bought him out for $1.5 million in 1922.

Note the fancy “programme” spelling.

This game against the Red Sox was doubly auspicious, as it was a showcase moment for Babe Ruth against his old team. And Ruth did not disappoint, hitting a three-run home run to cap a 4-1 Yankees win.
