On This Day in 1978: 76ers vs. Lakers

On this day — Friday, January 6, 1978 — in sports history the Philadelphia 76ers hosted the Los Angeles Lakers at the Spectrum and won their fourth in a row, 123-110. Philly was led in scoring by World B. Free (22) and Julius Erving (20), while the Lakers got 23 points from Norm Dixon.

The Lakers’ loss was their 2nd in a row in a streak that reached 6. Here is the program, featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was held largely in check with just 14 points:

The Sixers went on to capture the Atlantic Division crown before eventually losing to the Washington Bullets in the Eastern Conference Finals. Los Angeles, meanwhile, was ousted in the first round by the Seattle SuperSonics.
