Here are a pair of spectacular photographs that are purportedly of the Green Bay Packers in 1921. If that date is accurate then these are some of the best and rarest photos from the early days of the National Football League (when it was still known as the American Professional Football Association, or APFA).
According to the auction site for these photos, they were taken on October 2, 1921. On that day the Packers hosted the non-league Rockford Olympics at Green Bay’s Hagemeister Park. You can see from the images just how small the venue was, which reflects the humble beginnings of the new league.
Green Bay, under legendary head coach Curly Lambeau, demolished the Olympics, 49-0.
