Minor League Gems: Montreal Royals, 1946

Every legend has a beginning, and it was no different for the great Jackie Robinson. After spending fewer than 50 games with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues, Robinson began his Major League journey with the AAA affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Montreal Royals. In what was later referred to as “The Noble Experiment”, Robinson was the first black baseball player in the International League since the 1880s.

This particular specimen came from a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs (yes, the same name as the hockey team). Robinson, playing second base and batting second, came into the contest with a .357 average.
