Unbeaten Virginia Tech brought a four-game winning streak to Wallace Wade Stadium on October 10, 1981 to face the Duke Blue Devils. Here’s the marvelous program cover from that game.
The Hokies, who were no longer officially known as the Gobblers (thanks to head coach Bill Dooley), were shows as such on this great cover.
In a game that came down to the wire, the difference was a last-minute pick six by Duke defensive back Dennis Tabron. Duke prevailed on this day, 14-7. Dooley’s squad finished the year with a 7-4 record and no bowl appearance, the season after making the Peach Bowl.
Duke, under head coach Shirley “Red” Wilson finished at 6-5 with a 3-3 record in the ACC.
