I begin the countdown to Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons by turning the clock all the way back to 1972-73. Here’s a great entry from the Fleer cloth patch series of that era, featuring the helmet and wordmark of the Falcons, paired with the classic stars and stripes wordmark of the Patriots.
1972 happens to be the first year the Pats and Falcons met in the regular season, a 21-20 New England win at Schaefer Stadium. The teams have only faced each other an additional 12 times (not counting preseason) since then, so this upcoming Super Bowl makes 14.
