Well not too long (relatively) after that record was set, a current group of Dolphins seemed to be the only thing between that record actually falling.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve weeks into the 1985 season the Chicago Bears seemed to be unstoppable. They had an unblemished record and had just annihilated the Lions, Cowboys, and Falcons by a combined score of 104-3. Only two teams with winning records remained on their schedule: the Dolphins and New York Jets. And so the Bears arrived at the Orange Bowl for a week 13 showdown on Monday Night Football.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportspaper.info\/nfl\/seasons\/1985\/12-02_chb-mia.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportspaper.info\/nfl\/seasons\/1985\/images\/nfl-game-program_1985-12-02_chb-mia.jpg\" alt=\"MIAMI DOLPHINS VS. CHICAGO BEARS (DECEMBER 2, 1985)\" width=\"600\" height=\"798\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dolphins vs. Bears cover featuring Jim Covert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Dolphins, defending AFC champions, seemed determined to stop Chicago&#8217;s march toward history. They piled up 31 first-half points thanks largely to a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MariDa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dan Marino<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoorNa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nat Moore<\/a> TD passes and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/D\/DaveRo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ron Davenport<\/a> rushing TD. All the Bears managed was a single rushing score from backup QB <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FullSt00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steve Fuller<\/a> &#8212; starting due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/McMaJi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jim McMahon<\/a> shoulder injury &#8212; and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/B\/butlekev01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kevin Butler<\/a> field goal.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears scored in the third quarter to pull within 14, but any momentum they gained was lost when Butler muffed the ensuing kickoff, which Dolphins rookie\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MoyeAl20.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alex Moyer<\/a>\u00a0recovered at the Bears 46.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/H\/HampDa01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dan Hampton<\/a>\u00a0then tipped a Marino pass into the air, but it sailed downfield for 30 yards before landing in the hands of Clayton, who scored to make it 38\u201317.
