Almost exactly 40 years ago, Georgia and LSU met each other in college football for the first time since the Eisenhower administration. LSU, ranked #11 and playing at home in Tiger Stadium, was a one-touchdown favorite over Vince Dooley’s Bulldogs.
Let’s just say the home fans ended up disappointed.
Trailing 17-7 after one half, Georgia struck back when Lindsay Scott returned the second half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. LSU, who turned the ball over twice in the half, gave up 17 unanswered 3rd quarter points en route to a 24-17 upset loss.
Georgia’s two other touchdowns came on runs of 24 and 6 yards from Willie McClendon.
The Bulldogs ended the 1978 with a #11 rank and earned a berth in the 1978 Bluebonnet Bowl. LSU suffered two more losses and eventually fell out of the Top 25. They ended their campaign with a loss to Missouri in the 1978 Liberty Bowl.
